Fuel
Pay drivers for the fuel they save
Nobody controls the price at the pump. What a driver does control is how the truck is driven, and that is what a fuel bonus should pay for, so every driver, in every truck, has a real way to earn by driving better.
The Fuel category
A fuel bonus only works if every driver believes they can win it
The metrics inside fuel
-
01 MPG
Set a target every truck can hit
Peer groups first: drivers and tractors grouped by make, year or mileage band, so similar MPG is achievable inside each one. Then a static target per group, or a dynamic one measured against the group's own average as the month runs, with season and APU handled by the grouping instead of an exception list.
The problem today:
- One flat target across mixed equipment
- Newest trucks winning every payout
- MPG confirmed weeks after the month closed
Peer group J. Carr grouped with the 2019 tractorsLive MPG T. Fox: 7.94 against a 7.60 targetAgainst pace M. Barnes is 0.12 under the group average- Peer groups
- Tiered CPM scales
- Static or dynamic targets
- Live MPG tracking

02 Idling
Pay on the habits that travel between trucks
Idle percentage, RPM band and cruise control use arrive in real time, so a driver sees their own idling benchmarked against similar drivers and trucks. Admins can review individual idle spans and adjust the ones that were unavoidable - a broken APU, extreme weather - so nobody is docked for doing the job properly.
The problem today:
- Idle time drivers cannot see until payday
- Unavoidable idling counted against the driver
- Nothing fair to pay on when trucks rotate
Idle percentage I. Benjamin: 6.1% idle this periodAdjusted APU failure excluded for D. BowmanCruise use B. Blair: 71% of miles on cruise- Idle percentage bands
- RPM and cruise use
- Idle span adjustments
- Real-time telematics

03 Fuel fill compliance
Reward drivers who fuel where they are told
Transactions come in from WEX or whichever card provider you use. Where you run a fuel planning program, we compare each fill to the plan; where you don't, we flag out-of-network stops. Non-compliant fills can act as a disqualifier, or compliance can pay on its own - drivers above 95% get a reward. Admins can override any flag for special cases.
The problem today:
- Off-network fills at retail prices
- Fuel plans nobody checks against
- Compliance chased weeks after the fill
In network Fill 4 matched the planned stopFlagged S. Alvarez: off-network fill at retailOverride Detour approved by the fuel desk- In-network fill rate
- Fuel plan matching
- Out-of-network flags
- Admin overrides
Fuel data comes from your cards, your telematics and your TMS
Card transactions, engine data and trip records are pulled from wherever they already live and matched to the driver who was in the seat. Failed fills and engine idle spans that are nobody's fault can be filtered out before they reach a bonus.
